Online Dating Tips for the Frugal Dater

It's no secret that people are trying to save money in this economy. And one of the great things about online dating is that it is often less expensive than going out for the night to a bar or a club. But there are a few aspects of internet dating that can put a little bit of a dent in your proverbial pocketbook. In this article, I'll share some online dating tips that should help you avoid some of the more expensive pitfalls associated with finding love online.

Free Dating Sites May Not Be Free
Many internet personals sites offer 'free' trial memberships, but some of these sites require any trial members to pay for at least a one month subscription prior to being allowed access to the site. While this in itself is not all bad what someone new to online dating may not realize is that often they are responsible for canceling their membership within a specified period of time in order for their subscription fee to be refunded - otherwise they are converted to a paid member. Forgetting this one simple thing can cost the user a one month subscription - at a minimum - and even additional fees if the site continues to bill the person's credit card month after month (which many of them do). In order to avoid this, set yourself a simple reminder. A great tool for this is Microsoft Outlook's Task Manager. Set a Task in Outlook for the last day the site will allow you to stop your subscription and still get a refund - unless, of course, you wish to continue your membership.

Once You Meet Someone Remember to Stop Your Membership
Many times after two people meet online, one or both will forget to stop their membership and continue to be charged month after month by the site at which they met - for a service they are no longer even using! The logic behind this may be that people think it might not work out with the person they are currently seeing so they might as well keep their subscription current. But there's no reason to do this because it usually takes a few dates before you'll know whether the person is right for you and it takes at least a month to find this out - a month during which you didn't need to be charged. Remember, you can always join the site again if things don't work out.

Dating Coupons Don't Expire
Unlike coupons used at the grocery store, dating site coupons are usually good indefinitely. What is a dating site coupon? This is usually some sort of code that you can enter when signing up at a dating site to get some type of discount or extended free membership. It also may be a link that you can follow that will 'tag' your visit as one that should be given a special discount. Online dating coupons can typically be found on sites that are affiliates of the online dating service you are trying to join. These sites sometimes have special relationships with the main internet personals site and may be given coupon codes or special links to offer to their visitors as an incentive to join the online dating site.

So there you have it - some online dating tips for the frugal dater. There are many ways to save money when it comes to using the major personals sites and the above suggestions are just a few of those that have worked for me in the past. It doesn't hurt to save a little money wherever you can and that's especially true in this economy!
